Lumps and Bumps

Lumps and Bumps, 130cm x 19cm, fabric, foam, cardboard, recycled material, chair,

March – February 2024

In a departure from my usual approach of simply hanging my artwork, I wanted to experiment with something new. Placing my soft sculpture atop a personal object.

The sculpture's fleshy, clinical aesthetic contrasts sharply with the innocence and diminutive size of the chair, creating a tension that reflects societal norms against my personal perceptions of the body. Introducing the notions of attraction and repulsion adds layers to this dynamic – while the sculpture's corporeal qualities may evoke discomfort, the child's chair evokes tenderness or nostalgia.

This interplay of emotions prompts a deeper exploration of my biases and societal conditioning, particularly regarding the female form. Through this sculpture, I confront the complexities and contradictions surrounding society's treatment of the female body, which oscillates between fetishization and vilification, celebration and denigration, desire and revulsion.
